The wildfires that have blazed through Maui have left its people displaced and devastated. Here is an article with a list of places you can donate.
I was born in Wailuku, not far from historic Lahaina. My family moved back to California when I was a toddler, but revisiting the island in my teens, I felt a strong kinship. The smell of fresh jasmine, plumeria, and damp earth wafting through open windows on warm summer mornings. Cliff jumping on the drive to Hana, surfing next to sea turtles in Paia. Rolling fresh-caught fish into sushi, luaus, parties, the brine of the island’s sweet night air. All of these remembrances give me hope for Maui’s recovery and rebuilding. In the meantime, please send your thoughts and prayers.
Here is a hopeful and informative opinion piece by Lawrence Downes about the future of Hawaii, which also harkens to the islands’ resilient past.
I will be donating 100% of revenue from print sales to organizations supporting Maui’s recovery. You can view the options here.
